Delany College is a vibrant co-educational secondary college offering quality Catholic education for Years 7-12. It is invigorating leading a dynamic Catholic learning community that has such excellent facilities. I have long had an avid interest in students and how they learn and at Delany we work continually to improve our approaches in the classroom.
As part of this we commit significant resources to students in Year 7 and Year 8 to ensure that they have a positive start to their learning in our secondary school.

Our motto “Love, Serve and Hope” reflects the vision of our school founder, Bishop Delany, to “love God and live together in peace and charity.” As principal of Delany College, I am proud to be continuing the vision and rich tradition of Patrician Brothers’ education.
Our national award-winning, cross-curricular Literacy Plan involves an ongoing commitment to staff professional development in the specific teaching of skills to improve reading and writing outcomes. Results in ELLA , School Certificate and HSC over the past three years indicate that our Literacy Plan is improving learning gain and making a difference, not just for the academically gifted but for many of our students.
We have a commitment to meeting the learning needs of each individual student and we set high expectations of academic and personal excellence. We encourage students to achieve their personal best and we have a comprehensive merit and award system to recognise and reward excellence and achievement.
I have been a teacher for 28 years and have worked in Catholic schools for all of these years in a number of leadership roles. I believe that all students have a right to learn and a right to feel safe. Schools can only run effectively with a strong student management policy that has very clear expectations about students’ rights and responsibilities. No student has the right to behave in such a way that they detrimentally affect other students’ learning. This is fundamental to our management of students at Delany College and is the right of all students who chose Delany College as their place of learning.
I look forward to welcoming you.

I am pleased to let our community know that Delany has applied for Federal Government funding to build a Language Centre.
We propose to build a flexible learning space that provides students studying languages with access to modern and cutting edge technologies. The proposed learning space will drive personalised learning approaches in an environment where students and teachers can respond to individual learning needs using the laptop program funded by the Federal Government’s Digital Revolution grant.
The proposed scope of the building will facilitate whole year groups or multiples of classes to be engaged in differentiated learning. Specialised language laboratories, breakout rooms, data projection facilities and sound studio facilities are all exciting possibilities in the scope of this building project. A flexible design will allow for a covered outdoor learning area (COLA) which will give scope for a facility that provides a meeting place for whole school functions such as assemblies.
The school has engaged Thomson Adsett Architects to commence preliminary concept sketches. We are hopeful that our application will be successful and I will keep you posted as to the progress of this application for funding.

| Br Richard |
It is with sadness that I let you know that Br Richard (John) Doheny passed away last Wednesday 13th May, 2009 at Westmead Hospital.
His death came about as a culmination of the poor health he has been experiencing, especially over the past few months. He died quietly and peacefully with the Brothers of his Fairfield community at his bedside. Richard's contribution to the Congregation, to the schools he has been involved with over his 55 years, to the lives of thousands, is immeasurable. One of the real characters of the Patrician family, he is much loved and admired. He will be missed. Richard celebrated his Golden Jubilee along with Br Aengus Kavanagh, Br Gregory Fox and Br Marcellus Broderick and in his home parish of Ballingarry Tipperary.
May the road rise before you; and the wind be always in the hollow of your back; and until we meet again, may the Lord hold you in the palm of His hand.

Br Richard Doheny (1935-2009)
Br Richard arrived in Sydney in 1957 from Ireland and spent the vast majority of his teaching career at Fairfield Patrician Brothers.
From 1981 to 1987 he was Principal of the Patrician Brothers Primary School here at Granville. As a School Administrator, he was efficient and well organised and instilled into the staff and students a deep appreciation of Christian values and loyalty.
Being a keen sportsman himself, he ensured that the potential of sport to develop the physical, emotional and social wellbeing of young people was fully explored. Under his guidance and encouragement, the boys from Patrician Brothers Granville were a force to be reckoned with in the Parramatta District and beyond.
He eventually returned to Fairfield. Recently and for many months, he had been battling with cancer and with macular degeneration of the eyesight. He died peacefully on the evening of 13th May in Westmead Public Hospital. He is buried at Kemps Creek in Hoxton Park.
May his gentle soul rest in peace. Br Charles Barry
